Obituary:
Funeral services with full Military Honors for George Skomsky 84, of Elgin Ave. Massena, will be Thursday, December 17, 2009 at 10:00 am at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Massena with Rev Donald J. Manfred presiding. Friends and family will be received on Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at the Phillips Memorial Home in Massena, NY. George passed away Sunday morning surrounded by his family. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley or Trinity Catholic Endowment Fund. He is survived by three sons and a daughter, Ted and wife Patti of Pittsford, NY, Dan and wife Sue of Pembroke, Ont, Peter and wife Val of Massena, Ruth and husband Larry Dowdy of Massena. Nine grandchildren: Benjamin Skomsky of Rochester,NY, Danny, Jonathan, Joshua, Michelle Skomsky of Albany, NY, Peter Skomsky of Massena, Rebecca Fairchild of Brushton, Michael and Laura Dowdy of Massena, three step grandchildren , Rhianna , Derron, and Kyle Keon, of Ontario, Canada. His sister Mary Loeper of Cazenovia, NY, also survives him. His wife Mary predeceased him on July 16, 2000. His sister Anne Bishop and his brother Walter (Apples) Skomsky predeceased him as well. Born on April 21, 1925 in Auburn, NY the son of Daniel and Anna (Procanyn ) Skomsky. George served in the US Army during World War II. He was part of an anti-aircraft unit that served in Europe. Upon returning he attended Ithaca College and earned a degree in Physical Therapy and then continued on for a Masters Degree in Hospital Administration at Northwestern University. He married Mary Dean on October 13, 1956 at St. Ann's Church in Harper's Ferry, Iowa. George worked as a hospital administrator in Pittsburgh, PA, Rome and Troy, NY before coming to Massena Memorial Hospital in 1965. After retiring from administration, George opened his own physical therapy business assisted by his wife, Mary a nurse. A long time member of the Massena Country Club, George was an avid golfer. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. George was a volunteer at Trinity Catholic School in Massena and a communicant of the Church of the Sacred Heart.
