John F. Mayer ,82 of 1510 County Route 36 Norfolk, New York passed away on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at the Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, NY surrounded by his family.
Friends and family may be received on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Phillips Memorial Home, Massena.
Funeral services will be Wednesday morning at 10:00 am at the funeral Home with Rev Jeff Aiosa , pastor of the First United Methodist Church officiating. At the family's request memorials may be made to the Meals on Wheels program or the Memorial Fund at the First United Methodist Church.
Surviving Mr Mayer is a son Frederick J and wife Meg of Potsdam, a daughter, Linda and husband Robert Dunkelberg of New Carlise,Oh, two grandsons; Christopher J .Mayer and companion Bridget of Massena, Jamey R Dunkelberg of Fairborn, Oh, three great grandchildren; Colin and Kathryn Mayer, Colton Dunkelberg and a brother Hank Mayer of Ocacla ,Fl., several neices and nephews, Mr. Mayer was predeceased by a sister, Joyce.
Born in Massena August 13, 1927 the son of Frederick and Ellen Ruth (Peacock) Mayer. He received his early schooling in Massena.
He served in the US Navy at the very end of WW II from 1945 to 1946 and later he served in the US Army Reserves from 1952-1955. He was employed at Alcoa prior to his hiring at the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation in 1959, He retired in 1989. While Mr Mayer was working as a linesman at the Seaway he also was a driver for the Phillips Memorial Home for over 30 years. When he retired from that endeavor he was an all around handyman for the Schmenkel family that owned and operated the Econo Lodge, Massena for which he was well known and respected by the patrons and staff..
Married the former Daisy Miller September 1,1946 at the First United Methodist Church by Rev. Potter, Mrs Mayer died February 3, 1991. Mr Mayer was a member of the United Methodist Church. a member of the AmVets Post # 4, an active volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program for many years.
John and his close companion Lorraine Colby enjoyed dancing and attending many various community dinners for the past 10 years.He will be greatly missed by his many dance partners. Online condolences to phillipsmemorial.com
