Funeral services for George W. Smith, 82 of Chase Mills will be held, Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 10:00 am at St. Mary's Church in Waddington. Friends and family may be received on Friday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at the Phillips Memorial Home, 28 Clinton St. Waddington. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in the spring. Mr. Smith passed away at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg on January 27, 2010. George is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Troy (Erin) Basford of Chase Mills, Mrs. Heath (Susan) Strickland of Farmington, NY. Four grandchildren. He was predeceased by three brothers, and a sister, Edward, James, Donald and Mary. Born January 28, 1927 in Chase Mills, the son of Jesse and Loyola (Cavanah) Smith. He graduated from Madrid High School. He served in the Army during World War II, stationed in Augsburg, Germany. He married Dorothy E. Regis on October 18, 1958 at St. Mary's Church in Potsdam. Mrs. Smith predeceased him on July 6, 2007. He worked for Alcoa, from 1951 until retiring in 1989 and was member of Alcoa's 25-year Club. In addition, Mr. Smith was a member of St. Mary's Church in Waddington, the Knights of Columbus in Waddington, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1143, Amvets Post #4, of Massena and a past member of the Elks Lodge Post #1702, and the American Legion, Madrid. He enjoyed traveling, woodworking, and going to the casino. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post #74 Memorial Fund. The Knights of Columbus will meet at the funeral home at 8:00 pm.
