Marie K. Hayes, 95 formerly of Madrid passed away Saturday morning ( February 27, 2010) surrounded by her family at the Maplewood Nursing Home, Canton.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning 11:00 am at St John the Baptist Church with Rev. Msgr. Robert Lawler presiding. Interment will be St John the Baptist Cemetery, Madrid.
Friends and family members may call Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Phillips Memorial Home, Madrid.
Surviving Marie K Hayes are three sons: James D. (Mary) of Massena, John E. (Nan) of Queensbury, NY and Peter L (Laurie) of Madrid. Nine grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren and a sister, Irene Barrow of Cazenovia,
She was born April 19, 1914 in Ilion, NY the daughter of Earl and Katherine (Toomey) Place.
She married James H. Hayes October 19, 1933 at St. Mary's Church, Canton by Rev. Msgr John J. O'Neill. Mrs. Hayes and her husband resided in Mayfield Apartments for several years after spending most of their married life on North St in Madrid. Mrs. Hayes was a resident of the United Helpers Home, Canton until moving to the new Maplewood facility on United Helpers, Canton. She was predeceased by her husband January 30, 2004.Mrs Hayes was predeceased by a brother Donald Place and her daughter in law Dorothy Hayes.
Mrs. Hayes was a member and past President of the Altar and Rosary of St John the Baptist Church. For many years Mrs. Hayes was the head cook at Madrid Central School until later being employed as dining room attendant at the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center until she retired. She enjoyed knitting, performing in the Madrid Minstrel shows. Arrangements are the direction and care of the Phillips Memorial Home, Madrid
